My oldest son is a HUGE Star Wars fan and especially of Yoda. In his old bedroom at our house there is a framed poster of Yoda quotes, one of which is the famous "Do or do not. There is no try." We hear the word try often in our lives and often in the gym. The word try somehow implies that the person being asked to try something can then stop trying if success is not immediate, which is not at all the point of asking them to try it in the first place. What we mean in the gym when we ask a student or athlete on our team to try something is to instead practice it. Practice implies that there is perhaps going to be failure before success and that is ok.
Let's all practice removing the word try when we are asking our students or kids to accomplish something and see what happens!
